The Share-IT program collects obsolete/discarded/unused computers and peripherals to distribute reusable equipments to families in need. Unusable equipment and components are recycled through Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) program ensuring environmentally safe recycling and 100% diversion from landfills. By making one’s waste another’s resource, the Share-IT program fosters environmental sustainability and strengthens resource conservation while reducing ‘digital divide’, building social capital, strengthening skill development and providing economic empowerment support to those who need it the most.

DATA SECURITY IS PARAMOUNT

The issue of data security and securely destroying electronic data is of paramount importance for the Share IT program.

Share IT is a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR). As an organization passionately educating and empowering the community on how to protect privacy and guard against vulnerability we take data security with extreme seriousness and urgency. Our drive sanitization mechanisms and data destruction procedures are of Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher standard that ensures meeting state-of-the-art industry standards.

Specialized Disk Wiping Software

We use three-step process to sanitize drive data from hard disks by using specialized software outlined in white papers published by the RCMP and the United States Department of Defence. The sanitization process involves each bit of data on a hard drive being overwritten by an arbitrary value between 3 – 30 times.

The sanitization process is followed by re-imaging process with new data whereby the drive is overwritten completely with new data consisting of 0 and 1 numbers. Each refurbished system is then installed with legal software – Windows XP, MS Office and antivirus – and then placed in the homes of families in need. The Share IT program is operated meeting stringent eligibility standards in the distribution side of the refurbished systems as well.

Hard drives that are assessed not appropriate for refurbishment – as a further procedural step – are mechanically damaged and sent for recycling through Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) program. Community Environment Alliance is an Ontario Electronic Stewardship certified collector of used/waste electronics.

The recycling step is performed under the care of the Ontario Electronic Stewardship program ensuring meeting full compliance with best practice protocols for environmentally safe recycling – NO CROSS BORDER SHIPMENT, NO LANDFILLING.
