Did You Know?
- A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide emissions created by individuals and industry. As Canadians, we are responsible for 1/3 of our nation’s carbon footprint.
- A compact fluorescent lightbulb uses 75–80% less energy compared to an incandescent lightbulb!
- If, like the Australians, we embrace a total ban on incandescent lightbulbs, that would result in a whopping 8 million tonne reduction in gas emissions in Canada!
- Ordinary fossil fuel power plants are able to convert only 36% to 48% of the fossil fuel derived energy to electricity. This leaves more than 50% of the heat energy to be lost. What a waste!
- 99.9% of Iceland’s electricity is currently generated from renewable sources: 81% from hydroelectric power and virtually all the remainder from geothermal. Now that’s progress!
- Like all fluorescent lamps, CFLs contain mercury and must be disposed of properly. All Home Depot and Rona stores now accept CFLs for environmentally safe recycling.
